SIPAPU

“Sipapu”, 2019, Acrylic on PU foam, polymer clay and soil, 80 x 90 x 26 cm
According to the Hopi beliefs, Sipapu is a hole in which the very first people of this world came out of. Based on this belief, I’ve searched the origin of human phenomena in where it was born as Hopi people believed.

This hole that Hopis worshipped amazed me with its simplicity. In contrast to other religious practices, these people were digging a hole and visiting their undersoil. In history, religious structures are generally designed with a passion to reach the Absolute which symbolized by sky mainly. Hence, churches, mosques, synagogues or temples are built to be high and above people mostly; to make us feel so small in front of them.
